A growing network of private schools called Alpha School is attracting wealthy parents across the United States with a pitch that sounds like a tech startup's dream: replace traditional teachers with artificial intelligence. For tuition that rivals elite prep schools, students spend two hours a day on academic work using AI software, while the rest of the day is devoted to "life skills" like public speaking and entrepreneurship. The model is spreading fast, with new campuses opening in affluent suburbs from California to Florida.
But education experts are raising red flags. They argue that the AI curriculum is shallow, relying on repetitive drills and surface-level content that fails to develop critical thinking or deep understanding. One researcher called it "academic slop" designed to impress parents who want to feel cutting-edge, not to actually educate children. Critics also point out that Alpha School's approach essentially outsources the hardest part of teaching -- building relationships and adapting to individual student needs -- to a machine.
The irony is not lost on observers. Wealthy families, who could afford the best human teachers money can buy, are instead opting for a stripped-down, algorithm-driven classroom. Supporters of the model claim it frees up time for creativity and soft skills. But opponents warn that what looks like efficiency is actually a shortcut that shortchanges kids on the rigorous, messy process of real learning. For now, the trend is booming, driven by parent anxiety and a desire for anything that sounds like innovation.
