The Summit School District Board of Education is set to hear a dispute on Thursday over the timeline for a proposed charter school campus in Summit County. The High Rockies Community School and the district are at odds over when the charter group needed to submit its formal application, with both sides offering different readings of the rules.
High Rockies, which already operates a campus in nearby Lake County, has been working toward opening a location in Summit County. The group says it met the required deadline to file its application, but district officials argue the submission came too late. The disagreement has now landed before the school board, which will have to decide whether to accept the application for review or reject it as untimely.
The charter school's supporters say the delay was minor and tied to technical questions about the process, not a lack of preparation. They are asking the board to look at the substance of the proposal rather than hold the group to a strict reading of the calendar. District staff, however, have maintained that the deadline was clear and that extending it would set a problematic precedent for other applicants.
The board's decision could shape how charter schools approach expansion in the area. If the application is rejected, High Rockies would likely have to wait another year to try again. If accepted, the district would begin a more detailed review of the school's academic plan, budget, and facility needs. Either way, Thursday's meeting is expected to draw a crowd, with parents and community members on both sides of the issue.
The meeting is scheduled for the evening at the district office. No decision is guaranteed on the spot, but the board may take a vote after hearing public comment and legal arguments from both parties.
