The Healey Administration has announced the distribution of nearly $2 million in grant funding to 229 local fire departments throughout Massachusetts, marking a significant investment in community fire prevention and safety education. The grants, administered by the state's Department of Fire Services, are designed to support a wide range of educational initiatives aimed at reducing fire-related injuries, deaths, and property damage.
Funding will enable fire departments to expand public outreach programs, purchase educational materials, and conduct training sessions for both children and adults. Key focus areas include teaching smoke alarm maintenance, home escape planning, kitchen fire prevention, and the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several departments plan to use the money to launch school-based programs that teach fire safety through interactive demonstrations and age-appropriate curricula.
State officials emphasized that prevention remains the most effective tool in reducing fire fatalities. The grant program, which has been running for several years, prioritizes communities with higher fire risk profiles and limited resources. Fire chiefs across the state have praised the funding, noting that it allows them to reach vulnerable populations, including older adults and non-English-speaking residents, with tailored safety messages.
The announcement comes as Massachusetts continues to see a decline in fire deaths, though officials caution that complacency remains a threat. The grants are expected to be distributed by the end of the fiscal year, with departments required to report on their educational outcomes.
