Juneteenth celebration aims to unite community through education, remembrance

For Ronnie Russell, Juneteenth is not just a day of celebration. It is a personal commitment to keeping history alive and making sure younger generations grasp what freedom truly means. Russell, who helps organize the annual event in his community, sees it as a bridge between the past and the present.

This year's Juneteenth gathering in the city's central park drew hundreds of attendees. Families spread blankets on the grass, children painted signs with messages of unity, and local historians set up booths with artifacts and documents from the emancipation era. The event included a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, followed by a moment of silence to honor those who lived through slavery.

Organizers designed the day to be both educational and uplifting. Workshops covered topics like the history of redlining, the legacy of Reconstruction, and the role of Black churches in the civil rights movement. There was also live music, food from local Black-owned vendors, and a spoken word performance by high school students.

Russell said the goal is not just to mark a date on the calendar but to spark ongoing conversations. "If we don't teach the hard parts of history, we risk repeating them," he said. "But we also need to celebrate how far we've come."

The event ended with a candlelight walk through the downtown area, where participants carried signs with the names of ancestors who had been enslaved. For many, it was a reminder that Juneteenth is about both remembrance and hope.
