Families will get a chance to weigh in on three scenarios for school bell times and transportation routes being considered next year in the Cedar Rapids school district.
District officials presented the options this week as part of an effort to balance bus schedules, reduce transportation costs and give students more consistent start and end times across grade levels. Each scenario shifts the current bell schedule in different ways, with some schools starting earlier and others later depending on the building and grade level involved.
The first option keeps most current start times in place but adjusts routes to shorten ride times for students on the longest bus runs. The second option moves elementary schools to an earlier schedule while pushing middle and high school start times later, a change supporters say could better match adolescent sleep patterns. The third option creates a tiered system designed to use the same buses for multiple routes, which officials say could save money but would require the largest changes for families.
District leaders said transportation costs and a shortage of drivers are driving the review. They also noted that feedback from parents, staff and students will shape any final recommendation. Community meetings and an online survey are planned over the next several weeks, and the school board is expected to vote on a final schedule before the end of the school year so families have time to plan for fall.
