Houston Program to Fund Special Education and Literacy Training for Teachers

Houston Program to Fund Special Education and Literacy Training for Teachers

A new federal grant will allow the University of Houston to prepare teachers for two of the classroom's toughest challenges. The $1.25 million award supports Project BRIDGE, an initiative that will pay for master's degrees in special education and certificates in literacy for working educators.

The program is designed for teachers who want to deepen their skills without leaving their classrooms. Participants will take courses that combine reading instruction with strategies for students who have disabilities, an approach that reflects how often the two needs overlap in real schools. A student who struggles to read may also have a learning difference, and teachers who understand both areas can respond more effectively.

Project BRIDGE will cover tuition and fees for a cohort of educators, with an emphasis on schools that serve high-need communities. Organizers say the goal is to keep talented teachers in the profession by giving them a clear path to advanced credentials and leadership roles. The funding comes as districts across the region report shortages of specialists trained in special education and reading intervention.

Faculty involved in the effort say the program will pair university coursework with practical coaching in participants' own schools. Teachers will apply what they learn directly with their students, and mentors will observe lessons and offer feedback throughout the year. The first group of educators is expected to begin classes soon, with additional cohorts planned as the grant continues.
