HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Connecticut House of Representatives has given final approval to a new state budget that prioritizes education and childcare, passing with a strong bipartisan vote of 127 to 21. The plan directs hundreds of millions in new spending toward local communities, aiming to ease financial pressures on towns and expand access to early childhood programs.
Supporters say the budget will help prevent cuts to local schools and make childcare more affordable for working families. The funding is designed to flow directly to municipalities, giving them flexibility to address teacher salaries, classroom resources, and after-school programs. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle praised the compromise, noting that it avoided the partisan gridlock that has stalled budgets in past years.
Opponents raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the spending, warning that it could lead to future tax increases. However, the majority argued that the investment is necessary to address a growing childcare shortage and to keep Connecticut competitive in education. The bill now heads to the governor's desk, where it is expected to be signed into law.
