A transformative, free youth leadership and civic education experience is being prepared for 2026 by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The ʻAha ʻŌpio program is designed to empower young Native Hawaiians by deepening their understanding of civic engagement and their role in shaping the islands' future.
The immersive program moves beyond traditional classroom learning. Participants will engage in dynamic workshops, meaningful cultural experiences, and realistic legislative simulations. These activities are carefully crafted to help students strengthen their individual voices, practice essential collaboration skills, and connect their heritage to contemporary leadership.
The curriculum honors the program's foundational roots while actively responding to the evolving needs of today’s lāhui, or nation. By blending ancestral knowledge with modern governance structures, it provides a unique space for youth to explore their identity and responsibility. The ultimate goal is to equip participants with the practical tools, confidence, and community networks necessary to become effective advocates and stewards for their communities. This initiative represents a vital investment in the long-term vitality and self-determination of Native Hawaiian people.
