This summer, a national summit will bring together school leaders and young people from all 50 states to explore the future of artificial intelligence in classrooms. The event, organized by education advocates Schuler and Riley, aims to flip the traditional top-down model of tech adoption. Instead of adults dictating how AI tools should be used, the summit will place students at the center of the conversation.
The reasoning is simple. Today's students have grown up with smartphones, smart speakers, and adaptive learning apps. They are digital natives who already experiment with AI for homework help, creative projects, and even social interaction. Organizers argue that these students understand the practical benefits and pitfalls of the technology better than many administrators. By giving them a seat at the table, schools can craft policies that are both innovative and grounded in real-world use.
The summit will feature student-led workshops, panel discussions, and brainstorming sessions. Topics will include ethical AI use, data privacy, and how to close the digital divide. One goal is to produce a set of student-informed guidelines that schools across the country can adopt. Another is to train a generation of young leaders who can advocate for responsible tech integration in their own districts.
Critics worry that students may lack the maturity to weigh long-term risks. But supporters counter that excluding them is a bigger risk. If schools ignore student voices, they may create rules that are out of touch or that students will simply bypass. The summit hopes to prove that when it comes to AI, the best teachers might be the learners themselves.
