Arkansas State Fire Marshal Dennis Free is set to retire on July 1, closing the door on a 45-year career with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Reflecting on his long tenure, Free expressed a deep sense of gratitude for the path his life has taken.
"I've been blessed," Free said. "To take an old boy, who just barely got out of high school, and be able to meet the people I've met, it's humbling."
Free's career has spanned nearly half a century, a period marked by significant changes in firefighting techniques, building codes, and public safety education. Throughout his time in office, he has been a vocal advocate for fire prevention, often stating that the most effective firefight is the one that never has to happen. He has worked tirelessly to educate the public on smoke alarms, escape plans, and the dangers of careless smoking.
His leadership has been a steadying force within the state's emergency response network. Colleagues describe him as a dedicated public servant who prioritized the safety of both firefighters and the citizens of Arkansas. As he prepares to step away from the role, Free leaves behind a legacy of prevention and a career defined by humble service to his community.
