King Pushes to Restore School Mental Health Grants

Independent U.S. Sen. Angus King has joined a dozen Democratic colleagues in demanding that the Trump administration restore grant funding for school-based mental health services. The move comes after the Department of Education abruptly cut a program that helped schools hire counselors, social workers, and psychologists.

The lawmakers sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, arguing that the cancellation leaves students without critical support at a time when youth mental health needs remain high. They noted that schools across the country rely on these grants to address rising rates of anxiety, depression, and behavioral crises.

King, who caucuses with Democrats, said the decision ignores the reality facing teachers and families. He pointed out that many districts have already used the money to build teams that students depend on daily. Without the funding, those positions could disappear.

The group is asking the department to reverse course and release the funds. They also want an explanation for why the grants were terminated without warning. So far, the department has not said whether it will reconsider.
