A Kaukauna High School student's good idea means extra meals for community members in need.
The student enlisted the help of the school's consumer education department to prepare and package meals that would otherwise go to waste or never be made at all. What began as a simple suggestion grew into a hands-on project involving students and staff working together in the kitchen.
The effort reflects a growing awareness among young people about food insecurity in their own communities. Instead of treating the classroom as an isolated space, the project connected cooking skills to a real need, giving students a chance to see the immediate results of their work.
Teachers involved said the project fit naturally into the consumer education curriculum, which focuses on practical life skills. Students learned about meal planning, safe food handling, and portioning while also learning something about service. The meals were distributed to community members who might otherwise struggle to put food on the table.
Organizers hope the project can continue and possibly expand. For the student who started it, the outcome was simple: a good idea, some willing partners, and a few hours in the kitchen turned into something that made a difference close to home.
