Governor Kemp has officially signed a substantial $37.7 billion budget for the fiscal year 2026, with a strong emphasis on enhancing education and addressing prison funding. A significant portion of the budget, amounting to $300 million, is allocated to fully fund the Quality Basic Education K-12 student funding formula, ensuring that schools have the necessary resources to support students effectively.
In addition to education funding, the budget introduces $141 million to initiate private-school vouchers, aiming to provide families with more educational choices. This move is expected to foster competition and improve the overall quality of education in the state.
The budget also places a spotlight on prison safety, reflecting a commitment to improving conditions within correctional facilities. Furthermore, the plan includes measures to save taxpayers approximately $150 million annually on debt service costs, demonstrating a balanced approach to fiscal responsibility while addressing critical areas of need.
