Fewer than a third of North Texas TEFA applicants got a school voucher

Fewer than a third of North Texas TEFA applicants got a school voucher

The new Texas Education Freedom Accounts program, often described as a school voucher system, is off to a rocky start in North Texas. State data shows that while roughly 122,000 students across the region applied for the taxpayer-funded accounts, fewer than 85,400 have actually confirmed their spot to receive the money. That means less than a third of the initial applicants in the area have followed through with the final steps needed to secure a voucher.

The gap has raised questions about how the program is being rolled out. Families who applied but did not confirm their participation may have been confused by the process, missed a deadline, or simply changed their minds after learning more about the details. The confirmation step is separate from the initial application, and it requires families to log back into the system and actively accept the award. Many who applied early may not have realized that this extra step was required.

State officials say the program is still new and that some families may be waiting to see how it works before committing. But the numbers suggest that interest is not matching actual enrollment. For now, school districts and private schools are watching closely to see how many students will actually show up with vouchers in hand this fall. The program was promoted as a way to give parents more choice, but the low confirmation rate is a sign that the rollout may need more clarity.
