College of Education Doctoral Students Prepare to Become Leaders in Special Education through Participation in SPARC Consortium | College of Education News

Three doctoral students from the NC State College of Education have finished their first year of study under a federally funded initiative designed to shape the next generation of leaders in special education. The students are part of the Special Education Teacher Education Policy, Practice, and Research Doctoral Training Consortium, known as SPARC. This consortium is one of only two such programs funded by the Office of Special Education Programs.

The SPARC program brings together doctoral candidates from multiple universities to focus on research, policy, and practice in special education. The goal is to prepare scholars who can address critical issues facing students with disabilities, including teacher shortages, inclusive practices, and evidence-based interventions. Participants engage in intensive coursework, mentorship, and collaborative research projects that cross institutional boundaries.

The three NC State students are now entering their second year of the program. They are working closely with faculty advisors and peers from partner universities to develop dissertations that will contribute to the field. The consortium emphasizes leadership skills, policy analysis, and the translation of research into classroom practice.

Program coordinators say the first year has been a success, with students already presenting early findings at national conferences and contributing to ongoing research initiatives. The funding from OSEP supports full tuition, stipends, and professional development opportunities, allowing students to focus entirely on their studies and research. The consortium is expected to continue for several more years, with new cohorts of doctoral students joining each fall.
