American Public Education, Inc. reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2026 on Wednesday, posting numbers that exceeded analyst estimates and prompting the company to raise its guidance for the full year. The for-profit education provider, which operates American Public University System and other institutions, saw strong enrollment growth and improved operational efficiency during the period.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2026, the company reported revenue of $158.2 million, a 7% increase compared to the same period last year. Net income came in at $12.4 million, or $0.68 per diluted share, beating the consensus estimate of $0.55 per share. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose to $24.1 million, up from $19.8 million in the prior-year quarter.
The company attributed the performance to a 5% increase in total enrollment across its institutions, driven largely by strong demand in its nursing and healthcare programs. American Public Education also pointed to cost-control measures and higher student retention rates as key factors in the improved margins.
Looking ahead, management raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $635 million to $645 million, up from the previous forecast of $620 million to $630 million. Adjusted EBITDA guidance was also increased, now expected between $95 million and $100 million. The company cited continued enrollment momentum and operational discipline as reasons for the optimism.
Shares of American Public Education rose more than 8% in after-hours trading following the announcement.
