Washington Governor Bob Ferguson held a press conference this week to rally support for keeping the state's millionaires' tax, warning that its repeal would devastate funding for essential services. The tax, which applies to capital gains over a certain threshold, is set to appear on the November ballot as voters decide whether to scrap it. Ferguson argued the revenue is critical for education and childcare programs, framing the ballot measure as a threat to the state's most vulnerable residents.
But not everyone is buying the governor's argument. State Senator Nikki Curley fired back, accusing Ferguson of ignoring the real problem. "What progress?" Curley said, tearing into the administration's push to save the tax. She claimed the state continues to pour money into a "failing education system" without demanding accountability or results. According to Curley, simply preserving the tax does nothing to fix the underlying issues in Washington's schools, where student outcomes have stagnated despite increased spending.
The debate highlights a growing divide in Olympia. Supporters of the tax say it is a necessary tool to fund programs like early learning and special education. Opponents argue it drives wealthy residents and businesses out of the state, hurting the economy. With the November election approaching, both sides are ramping up their campaigns. Ferguson insists the tax is about fairness, while critics like Curley say it is time to rethink how the state spends money before asking for more.
