Instead, they arrived through technical training programs that emphasize hands-on skill over academic pedigree.

Many of them spend entire shifts in darkened rooms, adjusting controls while staring at screens that reveal the atomic structure of materials.

The job offers stability that is rare for vocational graduates. Contracts include regular hours, insurance, and a salary that exceeds what most of their classmates earn.
