Virginia has nearly doubled the number of schools earning its top accountability rating, with 44 percent of campuses now designated as distinguished. That marks a 21 percent jump in performance compared with the previous year.
The distinguished label goes to schools that exceed state expectations across three areas: academic growth, overall achievement, and readiness for life after graduation. State officials pointed to the increase as evidence that recent investments in tutoring, literacy coaching, and career pathways are taking hold.
The gains were not limited to one region. Divisions in both urban and rural areas posted improvements, though gaps remain between the highest and lowest performing schools. Several campuses that had been flagged for improvement moved off that list entirely.
Education leaders cautioned that one year of data does not settle deeper concerns about absenteeism and uneven access to advanced courses. They said the next step is to keep the momentum going while targeting the schools still struggling to meet the mark.
The state plans to release a fuller breakdown of results by division later this fall.
