The University of Hawaii Maui College has received a $660,000 grant to expand its programs in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The money comes from the federal Economic Development Administration and will support the college's efforts to train students for high-demand jobs in digital defense and smart systems.

School officials say the funds will go toward new lab equipment, updated course materials, and faculty training. They also plan to create a dedicated cybersecurity clinic where students can work on real-world threats facing local businesses and government agencies. The AI component will focus on practical uses, like automating data analysis for agriculture, tourism, and ocean science.

This is not just about adding classes. The college wants to build a pipeline from classroom to career. Many of the jobs in these fields are remote-friendly, which means graduates can stay on Maui while working for companies anywhere.
