Three students from the Birmingham area have secured a debt-free college education through an unexpected summer job. Instead of working typical retail or fast-food positions, they spent their summers as caddies at local golf courses. That experience led them to earn the prestigious Evans Scholarship, which covers full tuition and housing at select universities.
The Evans Scholarship is awarded by the Western Golf Association to caddies who demonstrate strong academics, financial need, and outstanding character. For these three students, the path started with early mornings on the golf course, carrying bags and learning the game. They did not come from golfing families. They simply saw a summer job posting and decided to try it.
One student said the job taught patience and responsibility. Another noted that the long hours in the sun built discipline. All three said they never expected the work to pay for college. Now they are preparing to attend universities like the University of Alabama and Auburn, with no student loans hanging over them.
Their stories highlight a lesser-known opportunity for families looking to avoid crushing debt. While many students chase scholarships based on grades or sports, the caddie route offers a different kind of merit. It rewards hard work, reliability, and a willingness to show up every day. For these three Birmingham teens, a summer on the fairways turned into a life-changing financial break.
