The Frederick County Board of Education voted on Wednesday to ban the use of AI by students at all grade levels. What do you think?

The Frederick County Board of Education voted on Wednesday to prohibit students at every grade level from using artificial intelligence tools in their schoolwork. The decision applies district wide and covers all age groups, from elementary classrooms through high school.

Board members said the move was needed to protect academic honesty and to keep students from relying on machines to do thinking that should be their own. Under the new rule, students may not use AI programs to write essays, solve problems, or complete assignments unless a teacher gives clear permission for a specific lesson.

Supporters argued that the technology is changing too fast for schools to manage without firm limits. They pointed to concerns about cheating, misinformation, and the loss of basic skills like writing and reasoning. Others warned that a full ban could leave students unprepared for a workplace where AI tools are becoming common.

The vote followed months of discussion among teachers, parents, and administrators. District staff will now draft detailed guidelines, including how violations will be handled and what training teachers will receive. The policy is expected to take effect at the start of the next school year.
