The Double Standard Facing Public Schools

The Double Standard Facing Public Schools

Nick Covington argues that the public school system carries a burden no other institution shares. It is the only system legally required to accept every student who walks through its doors, regardless of ability, background, income, or need. That open door policy comes with real costs, and those costs are rarely acknowledged in the debates that surround public education.

Private schools can select their students. They can turn away applicants who need expensive services or who might lower test score averages. Charter schools often find ways to filter out the hardest to teach. Yet when public schools struggle to serve every child, they face blame rather than support. The same people who celebrate school choice rarely mention that choice depends on public schools absorbing the students nobody else wants.

This imbalance has fueled a push toward privatization that quietly rebuilds a system of separate and unequal education. The language changes, but the outcome echoes an older era when some children were deemed worth educating and others were not. Covington's point is simple. If public schools are the only ones required to take everyone, then judging them by the same standards as schools that take only some is not fair. It is a setup, and the result is a system that keeps failing the students who need it most.
