The United States spends too much on K-12 education. That does not mean every expenditure is unnecessary, every state should spend the same amount or schools could operate without administrators. It means the current system often treats spending increases as the default solution to every problem, without asking whether the money reaches classrooms or improves student outcomes.
Consider the growth in administrative positions over the past two decades. Many districts have added layers of bureaucracy while teacher pay has stagnated in real terms. Money that could fund smaller classes, tutoring or higher salaries for effective teachers instead supports central office roles that rarely interact with students. Taxpayers deserve a clear accounting of where each dollar goes and what it produces.
Critics of this view will argue that schools face rising costs for special education, transportation and facilities, and that is true. But acknowledging real cost pressures is different from assuming that more money always equals better results. International comparisons show countries that spend far less per pupil sometimes outperform the United States on math and reading assessments.
The goal is not to starve public schools. It is to demand evidence that spending translates into learning. That means auditing budgets, consolidating redundant programs and directing savings toward proven interventions. Without that discipline, education funding becomes an endless cycle of requests with no measurable return.
