State Board of Education Passes Statewide K-12 Required Reading List

State Board of Education Passes Statewide K-12 Required Reading List

After months of debate and public testimony, the State Board of Education voted this week to adopt a uniform reading list that will now be required in every public school classroom across Texas. The decision, which passed along a narrow party-line vote, sets a specific set of books and texts that students must study from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Board members, elected officials, and dozens of parents and teachers packed the hearing room to weigh in on what Texas children should be reading. Supporters argued that a standardized list ensures all students, regardless of their school district, are exposed to foundational works of American history and literature. Critics, however, warned that the list leans heavily on classic texts while excluding more diverse or contemporary voices.

The approved list includes titles like "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "To Kill a Mockingbird," and several foundational documents such as the Declaration of Independence. But it notably omits books that have been challenged in other states, including works by authors of color and LGBTQ+ writers. Several board members who voted against the measure said the list was too narrow and did not reflect the state's growing diversity.

The new requirement takes effect at the start of the next school year. Districts will be given a grace period to adjust their curricula, but noncompliance could eventually lead to funding penalties. The board also left the door open for annual revisions, meaning the list could change based on future public input and legal challenges.
