SciTrek Program Ignites Curiosity and Creativity in Young Scientists at UCSB

For the past 15 years, the SciTrek program at UC Santa Barbara has been bringing hands-on science education to local children through week-long lessons covering physics, biology, conservation of mass, fermentation, and cellular respiration. The program aims to spark genuine connection and innovation among young learners who might otherwise have limited exposure to experimental science.

Each session immerses students in real laboratory settings, where they work with actual equipment and materials rather than just reading from textbooks. Organizers say the approach helps demystify complex scientific concepts by letting kids see, touch, and manipulate the phenomena themselves. A lesson on fermentation, for example, has students observe yeast activity under microscopes and measure gas production in real time.

Beyond the technical content, SciTrek emphasizes collaboration. Children work in small teams to solve problems, discuss their observations, and present findings to their peers. This structure builds confidence and communication skills alongside scientific literacy.
