Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Sunday that artificial intelligence has the potential to be a major benefit for K-12 students, but only if schools and teachers handle it with care. Speaking on CNN's State of the Union, McMahon described AI as a "great tool" for the classroom, while acknowledging that it comes with real risks.
She stressed that the technology should not replace critical thinking or the role of teachers, but rather support them. McMahon pointed to examples like personalized tutoring, quick feedback on writing, and helping students with research as areas where AI could make a real difference. She also said that schools need clear guidelines so that students learn how to use AI honestly and effectively, rather than relying on it to do the work for them.
The comments come as school districts across the country are still figuring out how to handle AI in the classroom. Some have banned it entirely, while others are experimenting with new ways to integrate it into lessons. McMahon did not announce any new federal policy, but her remarks signal that the Department of Education sees AI as a tool to be managed, not feared.
She also noted that teacher training will be key. Without proper support, she said, the gap between schools that use AI well and those that do not could grow wider. Her message was clear: AI is here to stay, and the goal should be making sure it helps students learn, not just making it easier for them to get answers.
