McMahon addresses the Education Department's future

Education Secretary Linda McMahon forcefully rejected a new set of impeachment articles filed by House Democrats on Tuesday, arguing that her efforts to restructure the Department of Education are both constitutional and legally sound. Speaking to reporters outside the agency's headquarters, McMahon framed the conflict as a fundamental battle over who controls American classrooms.

"The Department has become a bloated bureaucracy that dictates to parents and local school boards," McMahon said. "My job is to return that power to the states, not to protect a failed status quo in Washington."

The impeachment articles, introduced by a group of Democratic lawmakers, accuse McMahon of exceeding her authority by unilaterally cutting programs and redirecting federal funds without congressional approval. They specifically cite her recent executive actions that stripped the department's enforcement divisions of their ability to penalize states for noncompliance with federal education mandates.

McMahon countered that she is operating squarely within the bounds of the Constitution and the statute that created the department in 1979. She noted that the law grants the secretary broad discretion to reorganize internal functions and that her moves are aimed at reducing federal overreach, not eliminating oversight entirely.

"The founders never intended for a federal agency in Washington to micromanage how a third-grade teacher in rural Ohio runs her classroom," McMahon said. "I am following the law as written, and I will continue to do so."

The impeachment effort is widely seen as a longshot in the Republican-controlled House, but it has energized both sides of the debate. Supporters of the articles argue that McMahon is dismantling protections for vulnerable students, including those with disabilities and those in low-income districts. Critics of the department, however, applaud her for taking a sledgehammer to what they call an unaccountable bureaucracy.

McMahon concluded her remarks by challenging Democrats to take their case to the voters. "If they think the federal government knows better than local parents, they should say so at the ballot box," she said. "But they will not intimidate me into abandoning the mission I was given."
