The Howard County Board of Education on Thursday approved a calendar for the 2027-2028 school year with a shortened spring break and an early June finish. The vote settles a schedule that had drawn attention from families and staff who watch how breaks fall each year.
Under the plan, spring break will run for fewer days than in recent years. Students and teachers will still get time off in March, but the window is trimmed, a change officials tied to the need to end the year sooner. The last day of classes now lands in early June, giving families an earlier start to summer.
The board weighed several versions before settling on the final draft. Members discussed how the shorter break might affect travel plans, childcare, and staff fatigue. Some parents pushed back on the reduction, saying the longer pause helped families recharge before the final stretch of the term. Others supported the earlier finish, noting that a June end avoids pushing classes deeper into hot weather and helps students who take summer jobs or attend camps.
District staff said the calendar meets state requirements for instructional days and keeps professional development time intact. They also noted that the schedule leaves room for snow days, though any makeup days could shift the final date.
The approved calendar applies to all schools in the district. Officials said they will publish detailed dates, including holidays and parent conference days, in the coming weeks so families can plan ahead.
