Hospital Receives Grant for Food Vouchers, Nutrition Education

ROCK SPRINGS - A new grant aims to put better nutrition within reach for cancer patients in Sweetwater County. The Memorial Hospital Foundation recently secured funding from the American Cancer Society, and the money will support food vouchers and nutrition education through the Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County.

The grant totals $4,000 and covers the period from Sept. 1, 2026, through Feb. 28, 2027. Most of the funds will go toward food vouchers, which give patients practical help in buying healthy groceries during treatment. The remaining money will support nutrition education, offering guidance on how food choices can support recovery, manage side effects, and improve overall well-being.

Hospital officials say the program addresses a real need. Cancer treatment often makes it harder for patients to shop, cook, or afford the foods their bodies need. By combining direct food assistance with education, the grant aims to remove some of those barriers.

The foundation plans to work closely with cancer center staff to identify patients who can benefit most. Over the six-month grant period, the program will track how vouchers and classes are used, with the goal of showing measurable results. If successful, it could serve as a model for similar efforts in the region. For now, the focus stays simple: helping patients eat well while they focus on healing.
