A heartwarming story of coming full circle is unfolding within the Ann Arbor Public Schools district. Olivia Gregory and Melody Hassani, both alumni of Pioneer High School, have returned to the district not as students, but as dedicated special education teachers at Skyline High School.
Their journey together began years ago in Pioneer's Peer Connections program, an elective course that pairs general education students with their peers in special education classrooms to build relationships and foster an inclusive school community. That formative experience ignited a passion for inclusive education in both women.
Now, they are applying those early lessons daily in their own classrooms at Skyline. Gregory and Hassani credit the Peer Connections program with providing them a foundational understanding of empathy, individualized instruction, and the profound impact of building genuine connections with all students.
Their return represents a powerful testament to the lasting influence of inclusive programs. They are not only shaping the futures of their current students but also embodying the very principles they learned as teenagers, creating a supportive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed. The district celebrates their dedication as they inspire a new generation from the other side of the desk.
