Bishop Luers High School students traded their backpacks for work gloves this spring, logging an impressive 1,500 volunteer hours during the annual Sodalitas Day of Service. The event, which took place over several days in April, saw more than 500 students fan out across the Fort Wayne area to tackle a wide range of projects.
From painting fences at local parks to sorting donations at food banks, the teenagers worked alongside teachers and community leaders to make a tangible difference. One group spent the morning cleaning up a neighborhood playground, while others helped elderly residents with yard work and home repairs. The effort was part of the school's broader Sodalitas program, which emphasizes service, leadership, and faith-based action.
School officials noted that the day was not just about completing tasks. It was about building character and showing students that small acts of service can have a lasting impact. Many participants said they felt a stronger connection to their city after spending time working directly with residents and nonprofit staff.
The 1,500-hour milestone represents a significant increase from previous years, reflecting a growing commitment among the student body to give back. Organizers hope the momentum will carry into the summer, with several students already signing up for ongoing volunteer opportunities. For now, the school community is proud of what its students accomplished in just a few days.
