Siouxland District Health and local law enforcement officers gathered at Western Iowa Tech Community College on Wednesday afternoon to help drivers with disabilities practice handling traffic stops. The event gave participants a chance to experience a real pullover in a safe setting.
Sioux City police sergeant Anthony Vondrak worked alongside Webster County deputies. They stopped drivers just as they would during a normal traffic stop on the road. The goal was to lower anxiety and build confidence for people who may feel unsure about what to do when an officer signals them to pull over.
Drivers practiced handing over a license and registration, answering questions, and explaining any needs they might have during the interaction. Organizers said the hands-on format lets people learn by doing instead of just listening to instructions. Officers also got a chance to understand how they can communicate more clearly with drivers who have different abilities.
The training is part of a broader effort to make roads safer and interactions smoother for everyone. Participants left with practical knowledge they can use if they are ever stopped while driving. Organizers hope to hold similar events in the future.
