East Lansing Schools Update Sex Education Curriculum

The East Lansing school district has approved a revised sex education curriculum that moves away from traditional instruction models. The updated curriculum shifts focus toward reproductive health, identity, healthy relationships and consent.

District officials say the changes reflect feedback from parents, students and health professionals gathered over several months. The new material covers puberty, anatomy and reproduction while adding lessons on gender identity, sexual orientation and communication skills. Consent education now appears at multiple grade levels, with lessons adjusted for age and maturity.

Supporters argue the previous curriculum was outdated and did not address the experiences of many students. They point to rising demand for information about healthy boundaries and respectful relationships. Teachers will receive training before the material reaches classrooms next semester.

Some parents have raised concerns about the timing of certain topics. The district plans to offer preview sessions so families can review lesson plans and ask questions. Parents may still opt their children out of specific units under state law.

Administrators say the goal is to give students accurate, age appropriate information they can use to make safe decisions. The district will review the curriculum after one year and collect feedback from teachers, students and families before deciding on further changes.
