When single mothers receive the right support to finish their education, the impact ripples through entire families. That is the driving idea behind Cincinnati Scholar House, a program that combines affordable housing with academic coaching and childcare for single parents pursuing higher education.
The program, located in Cincinnati's West End, provides 40 apartments for single parents enrolled in college or vocational training. Residents pay rent based on their income, which allows them to focus on classes instead of worrying about eviction. On-site childcare is available, and case managers help parents navigate everything from financial aid applications to job interviews.
For many participants, the structure is life-changing. One mother, a nursing student, said she had dropped out of school twice before moving into Scholar House. Without stable housing and a place for her toddler during class, she could not keep up. Now she is on track to graduate next spring.
The program also requires residents to attend weekly workshops on budgeting, parenting, and career planning. Staff say the goal is not just a degree but long-term stability. Since opening in 2019, Scholar House has helped dozens of single parents earn certificates and degrees. Organizers hope to expand the model to other parts of the city.
Supporters argue that programs like this save public money in the long run. When single parents earn higher wages, they rely less on food stamps and housing assistance. More importantly, their children see a parent working toward a goal, which changes how they view their own futures.
