Central Lyon partners with NCC for Career and Technical Education math class

Officials at Central Lyon High School have moved forward with a new math class designed to connect classroom lessons with real world technical skills. The course is offered in partnership with Northwest Iowa Community College, based in Sheldon, and gives students a chance to earn both high school and college credit at the same time.

The class focuses on math used in career and technical fields. Instead of working only from textbooks, students apply concepts such as measurement, ratios, formulas and problem solving to tasks tied to trades and technical jobs. School leaders say the goal is to show students how math matters outside the classroom and to prepare them for careers that demand strong basic skills.

The partnership with Northwest Iowa Community College allows Central Lyon to expand its career and technical education offerings without building a program from scratch. College instructors help shape the curriculum, and students who complete the course can carry credits into further study at the college.

Administrators describe the effort as part of a broader push to give students more pathways after graduation. Some will go to four year schools, some to community college, and some straight into the workforce. The new math class is meant to serve all three groups by making the subject practical and connected to jobs that are in demand across northwest Iowa.
