In a significant move to address overcrowding and enhance educational focus, the Bibb County Board of Education has approved a plan to split Brent Elementary School. The decision, finalized on April 14, will take effect at the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
The reorganization will see the current student body and faculty divided to create two distinct schools operating within the existing building complex. Officials state the primary goal is to reduce class sizes and create smaller, more manageable learning communities. This structure is expected to allow for more individualized student attention and tailored academic support.
The plan calls for each new school to have its own principal and administrative staff, fostering a unique identity and culture while sharing common facilities like the cafeteria and playground. District leadership emphasizes that this transition is designed to minimize disruption for families. Current students will be automatically assigned to one of the two new schools based on their grade level and residential zoning, with detailed information to be communicated directly to parents in the coming months.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims highlighted that the split is a proactive step to manage steady enrollment growth in the area. "This allows us to move from one large elementary school to two smaller, more agile schools," Sims said. "Our focus remains on providing the highest quality education in an environment where every student is known and supported." The board will now begin the process of selecting names for the two new institutions.
