Belmont Public Schools are staring down a projected $480,000 deficit for the current fiscal year, a shortfall driven primarily by escalating costs in special education contracts. District officials presented the updated financial forecast to the School Committee this week, warning that the gap could widen if enrollment in high-cost out-of-district placements continues to rise.
The deficit stems largely from tuition and transportation expenses for students requiring specialized services not available within the district. According to the latest budget analysis, these contract costs have outpaced initial projections by several hundred thousand dollars. While the district had set aside contingency funds, the surge in demand for private school placements and related therapeutic supports has eaten through those reserves.
Town officials are now weighing several options to close the gap before the fiscal year ends. Possible solutions include tapping into the town's stabilization fund, freezing non-essential spending across other departments, or requesting a supplemental appropriation at the next Town Meeting. School leaders emphasized that they are working to avoid cuts to classroom programs or staffing, but acknowledged that the situation requires immediate action.
The news comes as districts across the state grapple with similar pressures. Special education mandates, combined with rising costs for contracted services, have created recurring budget strain. Belmont's School Committee plans to hold a special meeting next week to vote on a formal plan to address the deficit, with the goal of presenting a balanced budget to the town by spring.
