The Arkansas State Board of Education voted Thursday to approve a new rule that sets aside $2 million in funding for school districts facing the loss of rural campuses that are breaking away to form their own independent systems. The decision is aimed at easing the financial strain on districts that suddenly lose enrollment and tax revenue when a remote school decides to secede.
Under the endorsed rule, qualifying districts will receive direct financial support to help cover transition costs, including transportation, staffing adjustments, and facility maintenance. The funding is intended as a temporary bridge while the affected districts restructure their budgets and operations.
Board members described the move as a necessary compromise. While the state generally supports local control and the right of communities to establish their own schools, the sudden departure of a campus can leave the original district with fixed costs and fewer students. The $2 million allocation is seen as a short-term cushion rather than a permanent solution.
School leaders in rural areas have pushed for the aid, warning that without it, some districts might be forced into consolidation or deep program cuts. The board's endorsement now sends the rule to the state legislature for final approval. If passed, funding could be available for the upcoming school year.
