A state Senate primary could bring major changes to CT education

A three-way Democratic primary for a state Senate seat next month is poised to reshape the landscape of K-12 education in Connecticut. Incumbent Senator Douglas McCrory, a longtime Hartford lawmaker and former educator, is facing two challengers who argue the current system has failed the state's most vulnerable students. The outcome could shift the balance of power on key education committees and determine the fate of pending legislation on school funding, charter school expansion, and teacher certification reforms.

McCrory, who chairs the legislature's Education Committee, has championed increased funding for traditional public schools and pushed back against what he calls the privatization of education. His opponents, however, say his approach has not done enough to close achievement gaps. One challenger, a parent activist, is running on a platform of universal school choice, including vouchers for private and parochial schools. The other, a former school board member, wants more aggressive oversight of struggling districts and a faster rollout of early literacy programs.

The primary has drawn attention from outside groups on both sides of the school choice debate. Political action committees have poured money into mailers and digital ads, framing the race as a referendum on the future of public education in Connecticut. With no Republican candidate filed for the general election, the primary winner is all but certain to take the seat in November. Voters in the district, which covers parts of Hartford and several suburban towns, will decide on August 13.
